The power of water
Seattle’s rainy season makes water a big part of everyone’s life in the winter, as major storms create mountain snowpack, nourish plants and animals, refill reservoirs, and pour stormwater across hard surfaces in our towns and cities.
If you’ve been following along with us since 2019, you know that Seattle Public Utilities is building a plan with our community for the next 50 years of Seattle’s drainage and wastewater systems. Part of the ongoing Shape Our Water project includes exploring better ways to manage urban stormwater today, and for many generations to come.
Our local landscape and communities are literally shaped by water, but its impact can sometimes be hard to see (beyond wet socks). That’s why we recently developed The Power of Water – a StoryMap about Seattle’s waterways, our drainage and wastewater infrastructure, and the communities that benefit from them.
We invite you to visit this interactive, online experience to journey from ancient times to the present day, exploring how our region’s peoples and their natural environment have been affected by the abundant rain that is an essential part of living in the Pacific Northwest.
